Describe the surface
Try describing a passage with ordinary words: close or distant, smooth or rough, sparse or crowded. These are listening impressions, not claims about the equipment or recording methods used by the composer.
Listen at two levels
Begin at a comfortable, quiet volume. Listen again without making a large volume change and notice which details you missed. Avoid turning the sound up to chase every faint detail; a break can be more useful than a louder replay.
Keep the note small
Write one observation and one question for a later listen. These prompts are an invitation to explore, not a definitive account of the composer’s intentions or recording process.
