Crypto
A short practice in separating a repeating idea from the changes around it.

Find the anchor
Tap a comfortable pulse if one feels clear. Then stop tapping and listen for the element that made you choose it. A steady feeling can come from repetition and phrasing as well as from an obvious drum part.
Change the question
Rather than asking what should be added, ask what could be removed without losing the identity of a passage. Make two notes: an element that seems essential, and one that supplies contrast. Your choices may change on the next listen.
Keep the note small
Write one observation and one question for a later listen. These prompts are an invitation to explore, not a definitive account of the composer’s intentions or recording process.
