Hidden Past
A small exercise in describing a response to music without inventing a story for its maker.
Take a moment to listen.

Write before naming
Listen once without looking for genre labels. Write three words about the mood, then choose a moment that supports each word. Keeping an observation beside an impression makes a listening note more useful than a label on its own.
Separate impression from fact
A track can suggest a place or memory without having been written about it. Keep personal associations in your notes, but distinguish them from verified information such as the title and composer. Revisit the piece another day and compare your responses.
Keep the note small
Write one observation and one question for a later listen. These prompts are an invitation to explore, not a definitive account of the composer’s intentions or recording process.
